Production Diary

Before the summer- before the summer we planned and filmed our very own version of the Brittany video 'Hit me baby one more time'. This went really well because all of the settings that we chose came across well on camera and we convenient for the genre. We put most of it together on a computer and added music to it. The lip syncing we well in some areas of the video whereas in others it didn't go as fluent.

Wednesday 4th September- We had a lesson in the morning where we was put into groups that our teacher thought we would work the best with. My group consisted of me and 2 other girls, Karina and Sydney. I was pleased with my group as I was confident that we would have good ideas together and work well. We then set up a blog on blogger. And the first piece of work was to choose 3 songs that remind me of my childhood and upbringing. I analysed each of them and added images and videos. This went well because I was looking back at music videos over time, from my favorite's back in 2000, to my favorite ones now in 2013.

Thursday 5th September- On this day I looked at music videos that other students from other school had produced and realised what genres and tempos of different songs that worked well. I also looked at my favourite artists unpublished songs and covers to try and find a song that wasn't too popular. This payed off because i narrowed down several songs that I liked the most and imagined they would be appropriate for a music video.

Friday 6th September- Today I made a 'Prezzi' on Beyonce's past life and career in my frees and during lunch break. By doing this I realised how music, fashion and pop stars change over time. I also learnt alot about Beyonce and her career choices and why. Beyonce's videos show that she can go from sweet innocent and humble to seductive upbeat and fierce songs and videos. In my lesson that day I sat with my group and we went through the songs we had all individually chosen. The girls were positive mostly about the ideas that I had chosen and we narrowed them down to a top 3. The first was 'Heartbeat' by Nnekka, the second was 'Reverse Sky Diving' by Hot Natured and the 3rd was 'I follow rivers' by Lykke Li. This task was really effective and payed off because we all got an idea of what we all like and enjoy music wise, helping us to gather what songs we were all happy with. We then showed our teacher and she was really happy with our choices. We also discussed some ideas with her about what actors would be right for each song and the settings we could choose. For example we said that for 'Heartbeat' we could go to Brick lane in London and use a scruffy 'indie' couple, portraying how heartbreak through crying, loneliness and alcohol. This inspired us to narrow down the songs even more and choose our favourite.

Monday 9th September- On monday the work I did in lesson; I also brought home with me too. It was a project to create a presentation analysing 3 videos using the 'Laura Mulvey' in depth. This showed me how effectively some women are sued as objects in videos and what makes them independant and dominant; from helping themselves out of a car to posing around infront of men.

Tuesday 10th September- Today I made a 'slideshare' account to allow me to upload all of my presentations onto my blog. I then begun my 'Brittany Task', which was to upload the video we made before the summer and analyse it. by analysing our video it made me relalise the importance of lip syncing and making sure the lighting and shots all go as planned.

Wednesday 11th September- Today I carried on with the 'Brittany Task' and also made sure everything on my blog that needed to be uploaded was there. When I got home I began looking at different music over time, preparing my self to start the 'Music over time' timeline project.

Thursday 12th September- Today I finished editing my assigned lyrics which were 'I Follow Rivers' by Lykke Li. and then I begun the presentation on 'prezzi.com' and started to type everything up.

Monday 16th September- Today I carried on with my Justin Bieber branding of a star presentation.

Wednesday 17th september- Today I proceeded with my branding of a star presentation and completed it ready to upload.

Friday 18th september- I completed my Brittney analysis today so it was ready to upload on to the blog. I differentiated mine to everyone else's by comparing the similar shots we did to the real thing.

Saturday 21st September- today i carried on with my 'what music means to me' power point, i ensures i included as much detail as possible. at the end of the slide show i also included my top ten songs, although we wasn't told to do this i think it gives more of a clear idea about my personality and my love of music. I have noticed that my favorite songs are very random in terms of genre, for example i listed meatloaf i would do anything for love, as well as house music like reverse sky diving. I also begun to notice the changes in music videos and mise en scene in music videos over time. How they used to be is a lot different to how they are now. I also recognised the difference between the way a music video would be portrayed depending on their genre.

Monday 23rd September- Today we were put into groups of 2 and had to chose a song between us to lip sync. I was put with Daniella, we chose the song 'Founations' by Kate Nash. We chose this song because its not too up beat and it is a song that everybody knows, so we didn't have to do too much preparation in learning the words and the rhythm. We had never lip synced before so we did do a few trial runs, we noticed that it looks more effective if you don't actually physically sing the words and you literally move your mouth and over exaggerate in the way that you do it. We then edited the video, on mine we only cut the first part because the into is very long, and also edited the parts that didn't look too good. We also changed the size and zoom of the digital image to how it looks best on the computer screen. After this we uploaded it to YouTube, to then allow us to transfer it onto our blogs. I wrote a little bit about my lip syncing task beneath the video on my blog.

Tuesday 24th September- Today I went back to my group, we all looked at each others lip syncing videos and analysed them together. We came to conclusion that Karina's was the strongest and Sydney's was the weakest out of all 3 of us. We mentioned that Karina would be very ideal if we needed a narrator in our music video to lip sync throughout and Karina agreed that she would be more than happy to do that. With a little more practice.

Wednesday 25th, Thursday 26, and Friday 27th September- Over the duration of these 3 days we decided what 3 songs we have chosen among all of the ideas we came up with for our music video. the 3 songs we chose were all very different, they were 'Complicated' by Rihanna, 'I follow rivers' by Lykke Li and lastly 'Heartbeat' by Nnekka. We thought it would be easier if we distributed each of the songs so we had one each to work on, to ensure they were presented to the best of our ability. But before we did this, we all sat down and went through each song together to make sure that all of our thoughts and ideas on every song were included, rather than just the person who was focusing on each songs ideas. When we had all finished, we decided to upload all of our work on to a 'Prezzi' (Prezzi.com) with YouTube videos included so that it would make presenting to the class a lot easier, efficient and effective. By doing this over the duration of 3 days, it ensures that we weren't under pressure to do the whole presentation prep in one day so we can work to the best of our ability giving ourselfs a generous time limit, we also found that instead of scattering the days across the week, by doing it 3 days running we didn't get side tracked or forget any ideas.

Monday 30th September- Today we presented our Prezzi to the class. It went really well and we got some  great feedback. We noticed that as soon as we played the Lykke Li song everybody included Miss suddenly disagreed, by when we read out our ideas on Nnekka's cover of 'Heartbeat' and also played the YouTube clip, the class was really enthusiastic and gave us great feedback. This gave a clear indication on what our final idea should ideally be. By being assessed by our peers it helps a lot, because we get all of their great ideas and they open our eyes to things that we could consider that we haven't before.
Before we finalised that we'd 100% were going to use this song, we emailed Chase and Status for permission. We got their contact details off of their website. This is what we said;

Wednesday 2nd October- Today I had a little play around with the animation sites on the internet, having in mind that we had chosen to use 'Heartbeat' by Nnekka as our official song for our video. I thought it would be interesting to make a brief indication on our blogs of what our final decision was. I found a website called 'Go animate' and made a little video clip of what song we chose and why. I also thought that by doing this it would show my skills and also differentiate to all of the other software's we have been previously using. I found that this will be positive for future references if ever I ever want to portray something brief on to my blog.

Friday 4th October- Today we analysed the lyrics for our final decision in detail and also wrote some rough notes on what we can do in our music video to go with the words and the beat of the music. I found this has helped us realise that by choosing this song, it was the right thing to do. We came up with ideas to do with heartbreak and even begun to speak about mise en scene.

Monday 7th October- Today we was introduced to the next big part of our project. This was treatment. The Treatment consists of 7 categories; influences, concept, locations, artist style/ form, logistics, technology and lastly target audience. We distributed the headings to who would be stronger at writing about what. For example i love fashion so i volunteered to do the style and form, along with the locations and target audience. We all sat together and made mind maps of everyone's ideas, and also decided that we were going to complete the treatment on 'Prezzi.com'. We found by distributing the work between the 3 of us, we will get the task done efficiently and quickly.

Tuesday 8th October- Today I begun with the treatment task, I started with the last category first. This was the target audience. I did some research on what I should put into my questionnaire's. I made the questionnaire up with 9 relevant questions that would help us and enlighten some of our ideas. We ave these questionnaires out.

Wednesday 9th October- Today we went round and filmed a handful of students answering some questions we wrote out. We filmed it like a focus group and edited the video on Adobe Premier, cutting out irrelevant parts. We also went round and collected our questionnaires back. We found that primary research is definitely the best research, especially because it is so current with the music and music videos of today. We found that our results from the questionnaires were very varied, this is what we wanted because it doesn't give us a straight forward answer of what to do, instead it allows us to do more research and discuss.

Friday 11th October- Today I looked at our questionnaire results closely and wrote down all of the most important feedback we received. I made varied charts on Microsoft Access, to show a clear display of what they did or didn't like and their preferences.

Saturday 12th October- Today I put all of the target audience work together on prezzi, and completed the editing of the feedback video on Adobe Premier, ready to upload along with the charts and analyzing.

Wednesday 16th October- Today I begun my artist style/ form and the locations part of the treatment. I made a mind map on Microsoft and saved it as a picture and uploaded it to the prezzi. I then took some images on my phone of the forest and also looked at some of Brick lane on Google.

Saturday 19th October- Today we were given some sheets of what our shot list would look like. Our teacher introduced us to the task, and I made a lot of notes to refer back to when I come to doing it, for example about the camera angle, mise en scene, length of shot etc. I discussed with my group how we were going to do it and also how we are going to film it to upload it onto our blogs.

Tuesday 22nd October- Today I adjusted the colour of my blog and also added more labels. I felt I had to do this in order to make sure that it is neat and tidy, with a nice design. I focused the colour scheme around blue white and beige. I like using Beyonce as my back ground because she is my favorite artist because I love her style, attitude and lastly music. I have seen her several times at concert and at various festivals around the country. I also sat down with the girls in my group and we begun our shot list. We played the song on our phones and paused it to count the seconds of each shot. We wrote them all out on our note pads.

Wednesday 23rd October- Today we carried on with our shot list. We got to 21, so we dispersed 7 each to take home and draw up so we can make sure the shots all flow well together. When we were writing out the shots with the music playing we realised that there is so little time and so much to put into it. This task has definitely gave us a better idea of what were doing instead of just going straight in to it.

Friday 25th October- Today we all sat together and went through the shot lists that we drew up at home. We compared them and spoke about how they would and wouldn't work. We corrected some and also spoke to Miss about how some of the shots are too long/ short. We also watched some A2 music videos on YouTube that included long shots that lasted for around 9 seconds. By looking at others peoples mistakes it ensures that we will remember not to make them ourselves. We carried on writing the shots and took some home to draw out over the half term.

Half Term

At the very beginning of half term, we created a group chat on our smart phones. This was to keep us all motivated and in contact as much as possible.
Throughout half term we completed the treatment and finally uploaded it. Organised practice filming days, in which I made us a time table.
And also did some planning and research on filming prep, including costumes, makeup and settings, before we did the practice filming towards the end of the week. The filming was really successful, and we learnt that by making a simple timetable it does in fact keep your day organised. Luckily everything did go to plan and there were no problems.

Back to school

6th November- Today we uploaded all of the pictures and footage that we took during the practice filming day we did in the holidays. We uploaded the footage to Adobe Premier Pro. We used this software for the preliminary Brittany task before the summer, however we aren't used to it completely. After having a little play around we are managing to pick up some basic skills.
For the pictures to be presented on a different format to everything else on my blog, I created a slide share and up loaded that.

8th November- Today I looked through some YouTube videos of tutorials regarding how you use some of the tools on Adobe Premier. I posted them on my blog and wrote a little bit about them. I found them really helpful in developing my skills and knowledge.

9th November- Today I uploaded my time table onto my blog and wrote about how helpful it was. I did this so that I will be sure to remember to do it in the future. Another thing I did was tried editing our practice filming with what I learnt from the YouTube videos.

11th November- Today we finally finished editing the practice filming. Its given us a clear indication of what our final music video is going to pan out like, and we are very happy with the results. We got some feedback and developed an evaluation of what we thought about it as a group.

14th November- Today I chose my favorite A2 music videos that I have been looking at for research since we begun the project. I chose the ones that were the most relevant to what we are doing. I wrote about these videos in regards to performance, setting and mise en scene.
We also sat as a group and worked out when we were all free to do some more filming, but this time for the final piece.
We then emailed Mrs. Tucker (head of drama) in regards to when we can use the drama hall.

17th November- Today I did some research in to a brand new Australian artist that has been intriguing me recently. Her name is Lorde. She has just dropped a new album called 'Pure Heroin'. I was mostly taken in by her branding, I learnt a lot by how somebody could be branded in such a certain way. For example her 'Tumblr' says a lot about her personality and musical passion.
We also begun filming some feed back and evaluation.

18th November- Today we proceeded with filming the evaluation. We uploaded it onto Adobe Premier and edited it, like we did with the practice music video. By doing things like this, that include using Adobe, I feel like it develops our skills further and gets us used to the software for when it comes to doing the real thing.

19th November- Today I went through all of the teacher feedback comments I have received on my posts so far. I used the comments to go back and improve all of my work. I also created a post labelled 'teachers feedback' where I posted all of the comments in order to keep track of them. By doing this I found it helps a lot with my organisation skills.

20th November- Today I went through the footage that we took when we did our practice filming. I started making a video on Adobe of all of the bad shots that we did. I did this with the footage we used and the footage we didn't use. This will help when it comes to recognising what we can do to improve.

22nd & 23rd November- Over these 2 days I completed the editing of 2 different videos of bad shots that we had footage of. These helped us recognise what we did wrong and how.

24th November- Today we did a lot. We planned filming at South end on sea beach, got permission to go out and do the filming during a double media lesson from the head of 6thform, and did the filming. It was really cold and windy and the skies were dark and dull, however this went well with out heartbroken theme.

25th November- Today we uploaded the footage we did at the beach yesterday. It looks really successful, however because there are 3 of us, its hard to all work on one thing at the same time. So instead today, I worked on doing some work to post on the blog about what our final costumes were yesterday and why we chose them.

26th, 28th & 30th November- Because I didn't get to edit very much on the 25th, I made up for it over the period of these 3 days. I have really developed with my editing skills. I discovered the dissolve tool and the razor tool which i'm really liking right now. They create amazing effects. The opening is looking really good and all of my hard work so far is definatley beginning to pay of after looking through my blog.

1st December- Today I finished a presentation on 'Prezzi.com' that I have been working on in my free time. It contains all of the pictures we took during filming the official music video in Southend on sea the other day. I wrote quite a lot about the pictures, that's why it was so time consuming, but it has helped me develop analysis skills with things as basic as hair styles, costume and makeup.

3rd December- Today we did a lip syncing rehearsal for the rest of the filming days with Karina because although she successfully did it quite well at Southend for the first day of filming, we realised that there is always room for improvement. This has definatley helped Karina develop her lip syncing and also learn the words more fluently.

4th December- Today I developed further costume ideas for the rest of the days remaining to film. We developed a great branding idea for Faith. We noticed that statement necklaces could be her niche. I researched that Lana Del Ray has her individual statement nails, we took inspiration to do something like this for our music video, however with necklaces.

6th December- Today I begun analysing a Chase and Status song 'Time ft. Delilah'. I analysed it shot by shot. By dong this I leart a lot about how things are portrayed through camera position and narrative.

7th December- Today I wanted to do some more research on camera angles after doing the shot analysis yesterday. I studied the 'rule of 3rds'. Its really helped widen my knowledge, and given me some good tips for when it comes to filming more of the real thing.

8th December- Today we did some filming in the 3rd location. It was under a train track bridge in Harold Wood. We did a lot of research on this setting before we went there, so we knew exactly where to go and what parts to use. The only problem we struggled with was lighting so we used my car headlights to flash with the beat and make the lighting a lot more high key.

9th December- Today we uploaded the filming we did yesterday and begun to edit. We also uploaded the pictures and begun to write about them.I then created a prezzi of the pics. Pictures say a lot of words so its important to include them on my blog with the filming and research and planning.

12th December- Today we sat down with the rest of the class and our teacher and got told we had to begin with the process of creating a digi-pak and a website. We sat down as a group and discussed what kind of themes we each thought would be appropriate. We sketched some ideas out and finally agreed on the colour scheme and concept.

14th December- Today, after deciding what kind of house colours and themes we wanted 2 days ago; we looked for some website and digi-pak inspirations. We found a good number of them, including Rita Ora, Miley Cyrus and Rihanna. This has helped us develop our knowledge and branding in regards to marketing Faith.

18th December- Today we discovered a website creating site called 'www.wix.com'.

19th December- Today we begun with the website design and construction. We started by using the 3 house colours we chose; black, white and purple. We all sat together for this first part so that we was all aware and had a good understanding of what was going on with the site, so that when it comes to working on it individually when we have different frees, there aren't any problems. Just by sitting together today and putting forward all of our ideas I feel like I have developed good basic skills on how to use the website. Its not as complicated as it looks.

23rd December- The past couple of days, I have been working on developing the website progressively further. I have now reached the merchandise page, which is one the most important pages in terms of branding and fans. I designed some clothes and merchandise with Faiths logos and quotes on. I uploaded these designs to the website, but also did a post with an analysis by each product on my blog.

Over the Christmas holidays we did the 4th location of filming. This was under a subway. We really liked the surroundings in this one because it went well with our genre and theme. As soon as we got back to school we uploaded all of the footage and pictures, and begun to edit right away. I also edited the website throughout the holidays and managed to get it finished. Another thing we did in the time that we had off was created a social networking site on Instagram. We named it @FaithFranklin_.

5th January- Today was our day back, we got to work with the editing and all took it in turns in order to involve all of our individual techniques and skills. By watching each other do this, I found that you learn better through demonstration.

8th January- Today was the most successful day of the project. We finally finished our music video after consistent editing. Between the 3 of us we completed it relatively quick, we are ahead of schedule.

9th January- Today we filmed an MTV inspired promo video of Faith. This video is what we depend on a lot for the branding of her personality. We did it so that we could show Faiths fun side, whilst advertising for herself. We edited it on Adobe Premier Pro all evening.

11th January- Today I proceeded with editing the MTV promo video and finally finished it by the end of the day. Its only a short video so it didn't take half as long as the music video. After editing the music video into so much detail, I had no problem when it came to editing this one. I felt like I was used to it.

14th January- Today I uploaded the risk assessment that I made when it came to all of the days of filming that we did. It ensures we took safety precautions and understood what would happen if it didn't run as smoothly as we'd hoped. I managed to upload this after the filming was done because during it, my work load was very hectic and I was too focused on getting the videos edited and uploaded.

16th, 17th & 18th January- Today we did a photo shoot around school, inside and out. And also did another one at my house with lots of different costume changes. We did these photo shoots for multiple reasons. We wanted to have options to use for the website and digi-pak; so we thought it would be important to get as many versatile ones as possible.

22nd January- Today we edited the pictures from the photo shoot using after effects. We only used this software a few times for our music video so I wasn't too familiar with how it works. However by editing the pictures I have picked up a few good skills and techniques. We begun choosing what ones looked the best for the digi-pak, and finalizing our decisions.

24th & 26th January- Today we carried on with editing  and developing the digi-pak. Our research has shown us that you need more than just good pictures, you also need a lot of bold text and product information. We choose what our song list for the album was and also included the quote that we used in the MTV promo video on one of the pages.

28th January- Today we analysed the digi-pak photos, said what ones we prefer and why. By doing this its helps to recognise whether everything links in terms of branding, house colours and themes.

30th January- Today we gathered together a focus group of people that fit the criteria we have aimed for our target audience. We showed them our video, and asked them what they thought. This feed back is very helpful in terms of what they thought of our work so far. Its also helpful for when it comes to our evaluation. Feedback is very important, so its something we need around even if it isn't complete necessary. We edited this feedback using Adobe Premier Pro, and made it into a video, similar to how we did our music video.

1st February- Today I recognised that everything was up to date and finished. So I went through my peer assessment and teacher feed back comments and touched all of my work up using the advice I had been given. These comments really work in my favor and help me develop my work to a great extent because they can give you ideas that are outside of the box, that I wouldn't have thought of before.

Throughout the holidays in February from the 3rd until the 16th (2 weeks), we were issued the 4 evaluation questions. So we organised to meet up via our group chat to discuss what questions we were most comfortable doing. We helped each other plan for each one by mind mapping all of our ideas together. We completed the evaluation questions using 4 different software's.

17th & 18th February- I went through my blog and perfected all of my labels. I also added another slide show of pictures of my favorite artists to my tool bar along the right hand side. Its important to show my love and interest in music for this project. I also uploaded my music video to the top of my blog so its clear for the moderator to click on the link its attached to.

23rd February- Today I scrolled down to the bottom of my blog and wrote about why I did certain things. For example why I chose to create a prezzi to present pictures, and why it was important for me to get permission off of teachers in my school via email.

1st March- Today I sat with my teacher and went through my blog just to get their opinion on the overall product. My teacher was very happy with what I had done. We discussed some small improvements I could make, for example the colour and size of the text, to ensure it was easily readable and clear for the moderator. - I did these small tweaks on the 3rd & 4th March.

6th March- Today I posted the YouTube link of my music video in a post to sit on the top of my blog, although there is already a link, it takes you to a new tab; so i have given the moderator an option of what to do. I also left a comment for the moderator just to say thank you for their time. I think this is necessary because I do appreciate it.
