HAZARD

RISK FACTOR
ACTIONS TAKEN TO MINIMALISE RISK
Driving
When we drove to Southend, we had to
take the motorway route, this day the weather was really bad and it was
raining so the roads were slippery and busy.
mid
We made sure who ever was driving went
at a safe pace and didn’t put any of us at risk of crashing.
Sitting on bridge over river
For one of the lip syncing scenes,
Karina sat on a wall of a bridge that went over the top of a fast running
river. It was very high up and because it was a windy day there was a high
chance of her falling back.
high
Whilst one of us was holding the
camera, the other held Karina’s legs and feet to make sure she was stable and
felt safe up there.
Stroking random horse
When we were filming by the tunnel we
stroked a random horse, this could have been dangerous because we didn’t know
whether it was friendly or ill.
low
We asked the owner of the horse that
lived in the farm house opposite if we could film with it, so we got the
impression that it would have been okay to stroke, otherwise she would have
said no.
Weather
The weather was windy and wet. We could
have all got coughs and colds, in particularly Karina because she had to wear
the costume that we’d chosen for Faith, that wasn’t very thick or covered up.
mid
When we weren’t filming we made sure we
were all covered up and warm with coats and scarfs, we also took breaks
whenever any of us needed warming up.
South end- under pier
Under the pier, it wasn’t made for
people to walk underneath because you had to squat to get in there, and lean
over the whole time you walked under. There were rusty sharp nails and thick
chains that were hanging from the top, we were all scared that they were
going to catch the top of our heads. Also there was a lot of heavy weights
above us like boats and boulders, so it felt unsafe relying on the old wood
that it was built with.
high
We all watched each other get in to
ensure we all missed the nails and chains hanging from above, also once we
were all in there we avoided going too far in, and stayed around the edges by
the shore, because if we did hear a sudden creak, it would have been easier
for us to escape quickly.
Sea
At Southend the shore usually tends to
come in and out vastly.
low
We had to make sure that the sea was definitely
staying out for the time that we were filming on the beach instead of the
tides rushing in and drenching us and the camera.
Under tunnel
Blind spot, cars coming around the
corner generally didn’t tend to see us, so we had to be very quiet in order
to hear anything coming towards us.
high
Someone standing at opposite side of the
tunnel with a good view of either side to ensure that nothing is coming round
too fast and warn the rest of the group when to move.
Setting fire to picture in woods
One of us actually burnt our thumb on
the lighter quite severely, so it was a huge risk because it had to be
filmed, so any slip ups had to be ignored.
high
Make sure the lighter is facing the
opposite way to the direction that the wind is blowing in because this could
prevent the flame getting distorted in the wrong direction and burning the
users hand.
Filming in dark room
Filming in a dark room could mean that
there is a potential for anyone in the group to trip or fall and hurt themselves.
mid
Have a lamp on in the corner to give
off a fair amount of light so that its clear to see what we are doing, however
doesn’t take anything away from the ‘dark room’ effect.
Glass bottles of alcohol
Using glass bottles of alcohol could be
quite risky when laid on the floor, because if one of us was to trip or fall
and the bottle smashed, then glass is very sharp and we could hurt ourselves
if we landed on it, and when cleaning the shattered pieces up.
low
Maybe buying different alcohol that
actually comes in plastic bottles could have been a more sensible idea. Or
even pouring the alcohol into a cup to give off the same impression that it’s
there and the actress has been drinking it, however it wouldn’t be as big of
a risk if smashed.
Swinging on roundabout
Wasn’t holding on to the handle bars
because was holding the camera in place in order to get the shot of the sky
spinning. Could have easily fallen.
mid
A way to avoid anybody falling off or
hurting themselves when filming this shot would have been to have 2 of us on
the roundabout helping each other keep the camera stable and also hold on.
Another way it could be avoided is to have filmed it really slow with the
roundabout moving at a normal pace, and then speed it up on premier to give
off the same effect.
Filming in Karina’s basement
Cold and damp- Health risks on the crew
and actress.
mid
We could have potentially turned on the
radiators in the basement if needed; we also put a lot of blankets on the
cold concrete floor to ensure it wasn’t too cold or damp for the actress to
sit on.
Tripping over wires
Most times we were filming inside,
whether it be in the hall or Karina’s house, there was wires from the
lighting and cameras that could have been tripped over very easily.
low
Before we began filming, we all made
sure that everybody knew where the wires were, to make sure that nobody
tripped up them when we were filming the footage.
Falling from heights
At Southend we filmed up a huge steep
hill, Karina had heeled boots on and the path way wasn’t steady, so there was
high risk of her slipping and hurting herself.
mid
We made sure we only did the filming on
flat surfaces, where Karina felt comfortable and confident that she wasn’t going
to trip.
Broken lamp
The school lamp that we used for
filming against a black wall, and also for filming the MTV promo video, was
broken. The bulb was hanging off and flickering, and the plug back had fallen
off, so the wires were all exposed. This put us at high risk of getting electrocuted
so we had to be very careful when using it
high
We made sure that the switch was never
on, on the plug socket when we were plugging and unplugging the lamp. We also
made sure we didn’t have it on for too long of periods at a time, this is
because we didn’t want it to overheat.
